What Your Body Language and Personality Traits Actually Reveal in Astrology

Have you ever come across a person for the first time and felt you knew something about them? It's not what they said; it's how they said it. Their posture of the shoulders. Their rate of speech. If their hands shook while they spoke or if they didn't. Something about them just came through before a single word landed.

In Vedic astrology, there is something with a name, and it is a lot more particular than your zodiac sign. The characteristics of your personality and your astrology are not determined by one. They are created by a minimum of three layers of influences in your birth chart, and most people have never heard of all three layers. This post will tell you what these layers are, how they manifest in the world around you, and how you can take advantage of this information once you have it. 

Many individuals have an idea what their sun sign is. If you ask someone their "sign," they will tell you without hesitation that they are a Libra or a Scorpio or a Taurus. The popularity of sun sign astrology comes from its simplicity, as your sun sign is defined by the month and date you were born on, and it reflects your identity at a deep level, your values, and what drives you.

However, this is the issue. If 2 people have the same birthday, such as November 14th, then they have the same sun sign. They may be from the same city and have the same family upbringing but behave in very different ways. One might be loud and expansive in a room, the other quiet and watchful. One might speak with sweeping gestures while the other barely moves. This wouldn't be the case if it were only the sun sign that is forming the character.

Your sun sign is genuine and significant, but it operates on a level of the inner self. It influences your values, your intentions, and what kind of person you are trying to be throughout your life. It doesn't entirely control your outer appearance, such as the way you look when you enter a room, or your facial expressions when you're talking to someone, or how you respond if you see something you don't expect. That outer layer is controlled by a different, more precise part of your birth chart.

Your physical personality and body language are determined by the element of your Lagna or Rising Sign/Astrological Ascendant. The Rising Zodiac sign at the time of your birth is your Lagna. Not according to your birthdate only. It is done in conjunction with your birth date, birth time, and birth location. Hence, it is sometimes referred to as the most personal aspect of the birth chart.

Lagnas are different even for two people born in the same day, even two hours apart, and their personalities, physical characteristics, and mannerisms will reflect this difference. It's that detail that makes all the difference. 

Visualize your personality as a house. The deep structural values, embedded in the "ground floor," which do not change easily, are your sun sign. Your moon sign is the interior, the emotional life that only close people see. The front door and the facade are your Lagna. It is the first thing that the world sees. It is the one that rules your outward appearance, your natural reaction, and the physical expression of your personality.

Vedic astrology, or Jyotish (the science of light), is the most prominent house of the kundali (birth chart), being the Lagna or Ascendant, which literally means the point of light. It is said that it is the place where the soul meets the body in classical texts. At the time of your birth, there was a Zodiac sign that was literally rising over the horizon at your place, and that Zodiac sign imprinted its characteristics on your outward personality, your body type, your instinctive reactions, and your general presence.

How the Lagna Is Calculated

To calculate accurately, you need three things: your date of birth, your time of birth, and your place of birth. The ascendant changes about every two hours as the earth rotates, and for this reason even an hour or half an hour apart in birth time can give rise to a completely different rising sign. Knowing your birth time with such precision is one of the reasons why Vedic astrology insists on knowing the timings of one's birth so precisely. 

The Lagna as Your "Outer Personality"

Imagine that you are born with a mask on, and that is your Lagna. A fake mask, or a natural one? It's the natural you that comes first before you're thinking about it.  The first reactions to come out when you are surprised, embarrassed, or delighted are your Lagna reactions. Your Lagna is the book that your stranger reads when he/she meets you and makes a first impression.

Hence, astrology and personality can sometimes be more accurate when based on the Lagna as opposed to the Sun sign. The Lagna is more of the surface of your true look and actions in life. 

If the person born at 6 am on a date in Delhi has a Virgo Lagna, they will be composed, analytical, and precise in speech and will lean towards the head when you speak to them a little. The person born at 11 p.m. on the same day and in the same city may have an Aquarius Lagna, a demoralized personality, curious instead of emotional reactions, and eyes that scan a room before landing on one thing. Same birthday. Different Lagnas. Different personalities.

The twelve Lagna's are divided into four elements, namely fire, earth, air, and water. It is from the knowledge of your element of your Lagna that you get the widest and clearest idea about your personality both physically and socially. 

Fire Lagnas: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

Fire Lagna people often end up occupying too much space, both physically and socially, without intending to. Aries Lagna people generally have a direct, forward-leaning posture, fast walking speed, and abrupt energy while talking. Move quickly to the topic and do not like talking for too long. People with the Leo star sign are naturally upright, with a tendency towards having a strong chin, and are inclined to make warm and prolonged eye contact, which may come across as a welcome rather than a threat. Sagittarius Lagna people are the most animated of the three; they laugh openly and they move freely, even in the formal setting, they are informal.

Earth Lagnas: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

Earth Lagna personalities express themselves through stillness and deliberateness. Taurus Lagna (Vrishabha Lagna) speak with nice voices, in a slow tempo, and do not have flaky hands. It's a feel-good factor being in their presence. Virgo Lagna (Kanya Lagna) people are more inclined to make observations in a room than others; in fact, they observe minute details that will be ignored by others; their gestures are not sweeping but precise. Capricorn Lagna (Makar Lagna) people have a calm and serious physique; in some cases, they are reserved, show little expression in their faces, are serious, and are attentive.

Earth Lagnas are not in a hurry to communicate with others, verbally or physically. Their body language is "I am solid, I am considered, and I am paying attention." 

Air Lagnas: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

Air Lagna people are among the most expressive types of people, their thoughts running through their faces and hands as if they were eating, drinking, or breathing. The eyes of ‘Gemini Lagna’ people are fast, sharp, and changeable, and their hands are always in motion when they talk. When talking to them, it is like watching them think aloud. Libra Lagna (Tula Lagna) are Venus-ruled people, who typically possess an innate sense of style when it comes to their body language and can easily pick up on the emotional energy of a room and adapt accordingly. The Aquarius Lagna (Kumbha Lagna) people are slightly separated from social situations and stand a little away from them, which may lead to their being somewhat remote from the social, but it is natural to them to deal with it like that.

Air Lagnas speak even without talking. They respond by changing their facial expression, moving their eyes and changing their posture to what they are experiencing. 

Water Lagnas: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Water Lagna people have emotional depth in their physical being, and it manifests in them whether they are trying to show it or not. The voice of Cancer Lagna is softer and they have protective body language; they fold their arms, they lean slightly inward when talking to others, etc. The steady, penetrating, and completely calm look of Scorpio Lagna (Vrishchika Lagna) people can be frightening to those not accustomed to it. When Pisces Lagna (Meena Lagna) is in the house, they appear to be a little out of tune with the world; speech is slow, eyes are soft and appear to listen to something you can't hear.

It is difficult to read Water Lagnas as much of their expression is conveyed below the surface. The outer edges of what they are experiencing are what you see. 

Your Lagna sign is the first house but does not contain everything. The first house of your kundali represents the house of self, body, and personal identity. A planet at this house makes an impact on your personality and adds its flavor and sometimes a dramatic flavor. This is where the 12 houses of the Vedic astrology begin to get very personal.

The Lagna sign represents the color of a room, and any planet in the first house represents the furniture in the room. If Mars is in the room, the furniture is going to be sharp, angular, and active; the room may be painted a soft green (a Taurus Lagna). There is still green there. The first impression you get is the vibrancy of that Mars. 

Mars in the First House

Mars in the first house results in a person being extremely dynamic and restless in body. These people tend to be very fast, urgent, and direct in their conversations, sometimes coming across as blunt. They are prepared; their attitude is alert. They don't get a good night's sleep even when they're sleeping. It is not because they are aggressive; it's just that their bodies are more active than the average person's and have to be used in some way that is positive. 

Saturn in the First House

Saturn in the first house forms a more reserved and measured outer personality. They tend to be careful with their words, thoughtful with their gestures and slow to open up with people they don't know well. They may come across as serious or cautious at first sight, but they are typically much more relaxed once they get used to their presence. Saturn here also tends to produce an angular body type and self-containment that can be attractive or difficult for people to attain.

Jupiter in the First House

The placement of Jupiter in the first house generates some of the most open and warm body postures in the chart. These people have a wide and open physical body and make big movements with their hands, giving them a welcoming appearance, and they make the type of eye contact that feels as though people are being seen. Jupiter here makes it bigger, and for these people this means personality, making them naturally warm and filling a room with them. They tend to be physically on the bulky side and generous with their energy instead of having it. 

Venus in the First House

Venus in the 1st house imparts a natural grace and attractiveness in the outer personality. Such people tend to be very fluid, expressive, and pleasant in their speech, and they interact very pleasantly with people. They're warm and open in their facial expression and can ease people's nerves effortlessly. This is one of the most pleasing planetary placements with regard to outer personality, not in the sense of being pretty, but being nice.

Your outer personality is told the most by your Lagna and the planets of your first house, but there is a third factor that is important to know, and that is the nakshatra in which your Lagna falls.

The zodiac is divided into smaller parts called nakshatras or lunar mansions, which are utilized in the practice of Vedic astrology. Each zodiac is divided into 27 nakshatras, which are 13 degrees and 20 minutes of arc, and each of these has its own quality, symbol, and deity. The position of the Lagna in the sign gives texture and nuance to the overall sign energy. 

What the Birth Nakshatra Adds

The Lagna sign is like the landscape of your personality (plains, mountains, or ocean). The terrain in that landscape can be a valley or a ridge or a riverbank; this terrain is referred to as the nakshatra. There will be that fire energy and that directness in both, but one person born with Aries Lagna will have that fire energy in his presence that is quick and youthful and healing, and one with Aries Lagna in Bharani nakshatra will have that directness in his presence that is intense, determined, and sometimes even uncompromising.

Rohini Nakshatra is located within the Sign of Taurus and imparts a particularly soft magnetic nature to the personality. Rohini people are known for their good looks, and their expression is gentle and calm. Chitra Nakshatra (Virgo and Libra) imparts good aesthetic sense and refined poise. Those with Chitra rise are very conscious of their appearance and the appearance of the environment they are in. This is reflected in dress and/or deliberate speech. 

Knowing your Lagna, the planets in the first house, and your Lagna nakshatra is not only an intellectual exercise but also a fascinating one. It's quite handy and has other applications besides astrology. 

Reading Your Own Patterns with Fresh Eyes

Once you understand your own Lagna, you begin to notice patterns in yourself, which you previously thought were quirks. If a Scorpio Lagna person has always been perceived as being 'too intense,' they can understand that this intensity is a natural quality, not something to stifle. Instead of questioning and feeling bad about himself or herself for being cold outwardly when he or she is warm inside, a Saturn-in-first-house individual can now begin to work with that quality.

This is a real empowering type of self-knowledge. It doesn't "lock" you in a category. It provides a map of your nature's starting place, and you can make conscious decisions from there instead of being confused by your nature's reaction.
